With it being Mother’s Day this Sunday, we’re enjoying some of our favourite moments from Mums in musicals!
1. Heidi Hansen – Dear Evan Hansen
After seeing how her son, Evan, is struggling, Heidi realises she needs to help him, but also that she needs his help just as much. She promises to be there for him in any situation in a beautiful moment in the show where Heidi sings So Big/So Small.
2. Fantine – Les Miserables
Such a tragic character in Les Miserables but all Fantine wants is for her daughter, Cosette, to be safe and looked after. She dreams of a better world with nicer people for Cosette to grow up with – just like any Mum.
3. Edna Turnblad, Prudy Pingleton, Velma Von Tussle – Hairspray
Can anyone honestly say they’ve not had a discussion with their Mum ending with “but pleassseeeeee”? That’s why we love when Tracy, Penny and Amber beg their mums to let them audition for The Corny Collins Show in Hairspray when they sing Mama, I’m A Big Girl Now. We hate to say that kids know best, but, just look what happens in the end…
4. Donna – Mamma Mia
Everyone’s got secrets, right? When her daughter, Sophie, finds she could have three potential fathers and invites them all to her wedding, Donna acts in the most calm and relaxed way we could imagine…by singing belting Abba tunes like Dancing Queen, Super Trouper and, of course, Mamma Mia.
5. Margaret – Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
Based on a real life story, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie tells the story of a teenager overcoming bullies to become a drag queen. Jamie’s relationship with his Mum, Margaret, goes through many highs and lows as she tries to protect him at every given opportunity.
