Love… the basis of many great musicals has provided us with a host of fabulous couples throughout the history of musical theatre.

Here’s our top ten countdown of the greatest couples, but do you agree? Comment below with any other couples you think should have made our list.

10. Maria and Captain Von Trapp from The Sound of Music

When Maria is sent from the Nunnery to work as Governess for the wealthy Von Trapp family she has no idea she will meet the man of her dreams and that her life will change forever. Although, to begin with, Captain Von Trapp is fierce and strict he soon falls under the spell of Maria’s kindness and innocence. A bonus is that his seven children also fall in love with their Father’s new flame.

9. Edna and Wilbur Turnblad from Hairspray

Edna, although an iconic character, has many confidence and anxiety issues so where would she be without the support and encouragement from her husband Wilbur? Constantly ready and willing to boost Edna’s flagging confidence and be the voice of reason they really are a timeless couple and we love them.

8. Angel and Tom Collins from RENT

Angel and Collins meet on Christmas eve and fall head over heels. They help one another working through life with AIDS and inspire their friends to believe in love and although things don’t necessarily have a happy ending for them, their relationship demonstrates that love is the most precious git of all.

7. Cosette and Marius from Les Misérables

Valjean’s adopted daughter Cosette and young student Marius meet and fall in love at one of the worst times ever, yet with help from Éponine and Valjean, the couple survive and their love is captured in beautiful duets such as ‘A Heart Full of Love’ and ‘In My Life.’

6. Sarah Brown and Sky Masterson from Guys and Dolls

They do say opposites attract! Sky Masterson, a gambler, is bet that he cannot take the beautiful yet serious Sarah Brown, a missionary, out for the evening. Sky is prepared to do all he can to win the bet but even he didn’t expect to fall in love. Their relationship demonstrates that meeting your perfect partner can often bring out the best in you.

5. Eliza Schuyler and Hamilton from Hamilton

This couple had everything thrown at them – war, adultery and the death of their son. Based on a real historical couple, their love stood the test of time!

4. Elphaba and Fiyero from Wicked

Another example of opposites attracting our bright green, misunderstood heroine and the flashy, flirty Prince bring out the best in one another is perhaps best embodied in the stunning number ‘As Long As You’re Mine.’

3. Tevye and Golde from Fiddler on the Roof

Although this couple have been married for quite a while, when we meet them in the show they are happy and comfortable with one another and demonstrate the idea of happily-ever-after.

2. Curly and Laurey from Oklahoma

Curly McLain and Laurey Williams are destined to be together. From the opening of the show it is obvious they are smitten with one another but they are both equally proud and far too stubborn to admit it. When handsome Curly and the beautiful Laurey sing their classic duet ‘People Will Say We’re In Love’ we can’t help but long for them to get together but it is the reprise of the number that gives us goosebumps! We can’t help but be delighted when they finally get together.

1. Maria and Tony from West Side Story

Based on Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the tale of two warring New York Gangs. Tony is a Jet and Maria is a Shark but these star-crossed lovers cannot ignore their feelings and despite the heart-breaking ending we can’t help but fall in love with them both too.
