Love… the basis of many great musicals has provided us with a host of fabulous couples throughout the history of musical theatre.
Here’s our top ten countdown of the greatest couples, but do you agree? Comment below with any other couples you think should have made our list.
10. Danny and Sandy from Grease
After meeting during the summer holidays, Danny and Sandy are reunited by chance at Rydell High School. With Danny trying to stay cool in front of the T Birds, their relationship is stretched to it’s limits – but Sandy stays hopelessly devoted and the pair realise their love – with a little help from the Pink Ladies.
9. Edna and Wilbur Turnblad from Hairspray
Edna, although an iconic character, has many confidence and anxiety issues so where would she be without the support and encouragement from her husband Wilbur? Constantly ready and willing to boost Edna’s flagging confidence and be the voice of reason they really are a timeless couple and we love them.
8. Angel and Tom Collins from RENT
Angel and Collins meet on Christmas eve and fall head over heels. They help one another working through life with AIDS and inspire their friends to believe in love and although things don’t necessarily have a happy ending for them, their relationship demonstrates that love is the most precious git of all.
7. Simba and Nala from The Lion King
After wrongly being blamed for his Dad’s death, Simba flees the pride lands, leaving his best friend, Nala behind. Many years later, the pair are reunited, as Nala begs Simba to return and take his place as king. Then they fall in love. The end.
6. Sarah Brown and Sky Masterson from Guys and Dolls
They do say opposites attract! Sky Masterson, a gambler, is bet that he cannot take the beautiful yet serious Sarah Brown, a missionary, out for the evening. Sky is prepared to do all he can to win the bet but even he didn’t expect to fall in love. Their relationship demonstrates that meeting your perfect partner can often bring out the best in you.
5. Aladdin and Princess Jasmine from Aladdin
An unlikely couple, who come together, with the help of a Genie and a flying carpet which provides the stage for one of the most famous Disney love songs of all time.
4. Christine and Raoul from The Phantom of the Opera
Childhood sweethearts Christine and Raoul are reunited when he sees her performing on stage. However, he has to prize her away from The Phantom. He does just that to make sure his heart doesn’t smash into tiny little pieces like a chandelier.
3. Tevye and Golde from Fiddler on the Roof
Although this couple have been married for quite a while, when we meet them in the show they are happy and comfortable with one another and demonstrate the idea of happily-ever-after.
2. Curly and Laurey from Oklahoma
Curly McLain and Laurey Williams are destined to be together. From the opening of the show it is obvious they are smitten with one another but they are both equally proud and far too stubborn to admit it. When handsome Curly and the beautiful Laurey sing their classic duet ‘People Will Say We’re In Love’ we can’t help but long for them to get together but it is the reprise of the number that gives us goosebumps! We can’t help but be delighted when they finally get together.
1. Maria and Tony from West Side Story
Based on Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the tale of two warring New York Gangs. Tony is a Jet and Maria is a Shark but these star-crossed lovers cannot ignore their feelings and despite the heart-breaking ending we can’t help but fall in love with them both too.
