Which musical theatre duets make your heart sing?
When two superstar voices come together on one great show tune, we feel our heart’s soar. Throw in fabulous harmonies, great characterisation, breath-taking talent and duets can totally transfix an audience.
Duets can capture the moment our leading characters fall in love or emphasise the comedy duo and friendships, but no matter what, the power of the duet should never be underestimated.
Here’s our countdown of the top 10 musical theatre duets and why they’ve made the short-list.
10. Suddenly Seymour – Little Shop Of Horrors
This love song between Seymour Krelborn and Audrey sees the two characters open up to each other, and, we see that there is surely a possibility for them to become a couple. This musical is a hilarious classic with great characters and a fabulous score – what’s not to love?
9. 16 Going On 17 – Sound Of Music
A coming of age moment for Liesl who is falling in love for the first time with messenger, Rolfe. This musical is one we are all introduced to at a young age and so it had to make the list.
8. You’re the One That I Want – Grease
So despite my feminist misgivings that in essence, Sandy changes herself completely to get the guy, I have included this number in the list because we all get introduced to the film at an early age. The shows musical numbers will follow you to every cheesy nightclub and wedding you’re likely to go to for life.
7. Can You Feel The Love Tonight – The Lion King
A fabulous show to introduce new musical theatre audiences to – great music and fun so I think it’s definitely worthy of a place on our list.
6. Take Me Or Leave Me – Rent
This is surely how all arguments should be handled! Maureen and Joanne share one of the most passionate duets in the history of musical theatre and we, through this fabulous number, are shown how much the two women love each other.
5. As Long As You’re Mine – Wicked
A stunning musical number that we can’t help but love. We know the future isn’t exactly rosy, but this moment is pretty perfect and we too want it to last.
4. Tonight – West Side Story
The star-crossed lovers capture our hearts tool. We have all seen the film but if you can see a production it will take your breath away.
3. Move On – Sunday In The Park With George
A great song to listen to again and again when you are feeling a bit lost – we all have to keep moving on. We must trust our instincts. A beautiful sentiment and gorgeous music – of course, it has to make our list.
2. All I Ask Of You – Phantom Of The Opera
This hauntingly beautiful number is all about the support and encouragement Raoul offers Christine.
1. People Will Say We’re In Love – Oklahoma
What’s not to love? Handsome cowman Curly and feisty strong Laurey both suffer from the same problem; they really like each other but are too stubborn to admit it! This number embodies their characters and the love that is developing – it’s a classic and has to be our number 1.
